Leadership Set For Trip To 'Principal's Office'

Ravens execs will visit Steve Bisciotti's Florida home to discuss the upcoming offseason.


Sometimes a trip to the principal’s office isn’t such a bad thing after all.

At least that’s the case for the Ravens’ brain trust, which will head to Owner Steve Bisciotti’s Florida home this weekend to lay out the offseason gameplan. General Manager Ozzie Newsome referred to the annual event as a visit “down to the principal’s office.”



Newsome, Head Coach John Harbaugh, President Dick Cass, Assistant General Manager Eric DeCosta and Senior Vice President of Football Administration Pat Moriarty will all attend.

It’s a business trip, but there are certainly worse places to hold a meeting than Jupiter, Fla.

“You get a chance to go to a man’s house, who just happens to live next to Tiger Woods,” Newsome joked.

The annual event started five years ago as a way for the organization’s brass to come together and establish a clear set of priorities heading into the critical offseason months.

“What I try to do is I try to bring as much information to the table about the contractual situations, about the makeup of the roster, and we sit down and tear it apart,” Newsome said. “And we look at all elements of it.”

During the two-day meeting, the group will discuss which free agents to bring back and who to let test the open market. They will also talk about the possibility of using the franchise tag on a player like tight end Dennis Pitta or left tackle Eugene Monroe.

“We’ll lay everything out there,” Newsome said. “We’ll know exactly what our cap situation is. We’ll talk about guys that we want to re-sign, extend, whatever, release, and we will do whatever it takes.”

The group examines the roster from a salary cap perspective, which is Moriarty’s specialty, and also from the standpoint of the coaches who work with the players every day.

“We have John there providing all the insights from the coaching,” Newsome said. “Then we come away with a plan, and we try to execute that plan.”
